For the opening concert of the 2024–2025 season “Elemental Forces,” the audience is invited to join the band dressed in costume for a wickedly good time at this Halloween-themed concert featuring music that evokes the thrill and tension of this haunting season. You may find some fuel for your nightmares among the soaring, fiery, and mysterious soundscapes by composers such as John Mackey, Steven Bryant, Cait Nishimura, and Leonard Bernstein.
We continue the theme of “Elemental Forces” with a holiday program titled “Joy.” While it may be cold outside, you’ll stay warm as we take a musical ride through the joyful landscape of the holidays. You have an express ticket to sing along in celebration of the season and ring in a new year of good cheer.
“Elemental Forces” continues with a musical exploration of speed. The impetus of the evening will be propelled by the world premiere of Mach 1 by Daniel Kim, winner of the WCCB’s Young Michigan Composers Concert Band Composition Contest. The momentum will build during the performance of Concerto for Piano, Winds, and Percussion with composer, band member, and Assistant Conductor James Wagner as piano soloist. Your pulse may accelerate as the evening flies by with music by composers Kevin Day, Leroy Anderson, Jodie Blackshaw, and others.
The act of making music in small groups and sharing the experience of music forges connections between individuals and within our community. Join us for a program of small ensembles — from duets and trios to 20-piece bands — playing a variety of musical genres. Donations will benefit the Ken Bowman Memorial Scholarship, which supports the expenses for an area middle- or high-school band student to attend Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.
Music is an elemental force that can bring about change as well as reflect changes in society and within ourselves. The selections by Kimberly Archer, Omar Thomas, Frank Ticheli, and others express hope for change, laud the bringers of reform, and inspire us to initiate transformation. Also featuring the winner of the 2025 concerto competition.
Summer heats up with a concert of popular music, show tunes, and light classics followed by the band’s annual pie social.
Enjoy the conclusion of “Elemental Forces” at this outdoor concert of patriotic and light summer music at German Park. Picnic table seating will be available, or you can bring your own blanket or lawn chair.
